Our Faculty

The University of Ruhuna is one of the leading universities in Sri Lanka. The University of Ruhuna was established by a special presidential Decree on 1st September 1978 as Ruhuna University college fulfilling a long cherished desire of the people of Southern Sri Lanka.

The Faculty has three Departments of studies namely Department of Management and Entrepreneurship, Department of Accounting and Finance and Department of Marketing, in addition to the computer unit and the e-learning centre. At present Faculty offers courses in a range of disciplines leading to Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)Honours degrees.

Our Mission

This Faculty is designed to investigate into unexplored phenomena on Management and Finance by maintaining a trade–off between modern Management Systems and Sri Lankan regional cultural contents, to transfer such knowledge by means of study programmes, conferences and publications, and to become the Centre for Regional Management Studies in Sri Lanka.

In the present contemporary arena it is essential that management students adjust and adapt quickly to diverse situations also be flexible to work with teams spread across the Globe. The faculty offers Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Human resource management and Marketing specialization areas fully in English which allows to develop the professional skills needed in organizations perform in global markets.

Our Research & Publications

Ruhuna Journal of Management and Finance (RJMF) is a peer reviewed international journal; published bi-annually by the Faculty. The International Conference of Management and Finance (ICME) is organized by the faculty aiming bring together academics, researchers and practitioners from around the world to an International forum to share knowledge and experiences in the fields of management and economics.

Grades Obtained for the Programme Review 2018

The programme review for the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) offered by the Faculty of Management and Finance was conducted by a review team consisting of academics from the state university system in Sri Lanka. The review process for the cluster of three degree programmes; Honours in Entrepreneurship, Honours in Human Resource Management, and Honours in Marketing was conducted from 27th of August 2018 to 30th of August 2018. The cluster obtained grade “A”, which is considered to be the top grade in the rankings system. Further, the BBA Honours in Accounting was reviewed separately from 13th of August 2018 to 16th of August 2018 and obtained grade “B”.

Faculty Day 2019
The Faculty of Management and Finance organizes the "Faculty Day 2019"; an annual event on which academics, non-academics, and undergraduates are engaged in various events. The " Faculty Day 2019" will kick off at 8.00 a.m. on 30th of January 2019 at university playground. The event will encourage the active involvement of the participants throught providing a platform to break the wheel of monotony for a while. As such, the event will assist undergraduates somewhat to strike a balance between classwork and extra-curricular activities.

Student intake for the 2018
The new student intake for the 2018 at the Faculty of Management and Finance is to be on 08th of November, 2018. Further, the inauguration ceremony to welcome the students officially to the faculty is scheduled to be held on 13th of November, 2018. After enrolling, the registered newcomers are required to attend for the orientation programme which will commence on 14th of November and continuing till the 23rd of November, 2018. Academic work for the new students is scheduled to be commenced on 26th of November 2018.
A Day Exposure Visit to Sri Lanka Standards Institutions
Department of Management and Entrepreneurship organized a day exposure visit to Sri Lanka Standards Institutions on 31st of August, 2018 as to provide students with an awareness of quality management systems and standards. 34 HRM specialized undergraduates at the 3000 level participated the program. Basically, the program provided awareness on Good Manufacturing Practices, ISO 18001 HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point), ISO 22000 (Food Safety Management), ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System, ISO 45001:2018 OHSAS (Occupational Health and Safety Management System, and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
A Workshop on Business Plan Development
A three-day workshop on "Business Plan Development" for the subject of Venture Creation, organized by the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship is going to be held on 17th,18th and 19th August 2018 at MFLT 03 at the faculty. The target group for the workshop is 3000 level undergraduates in Entrepreneurship Specialization area. Professionals representing the Vocational Training Centre, Kaluthara are to be acted as the resourse persons of the workshop. The workshop will support to enhance the business plan development skills of the undergraduates to pursue their success in the field of entrepreneurship.

The Orator 2018 at University of Ruhuna

The Orator 2018 at University of Ruhuna is going to be conducted in three rounds; Faculty Level, Semi Final, and Grand Finale in May 2018, June 2018, and October 2018 respectively. The competition is conducted in all three languages; Sinhala, English, and Tamil and the Grand Finale will take place in Faculty of Medicine, Galle. Three Days Field Visit on Tourism Development

The final year marketing undergraduates had the opportunity to experience a three days field visit on Tourism Development, organized by the Circle of Marketing in coordination with Ruhunu Tourist Bureau on 1st, 2nd and 03rd of August 2018. Through participating the field visit to Hambantota District, students had a chance to see tourism, hospitality and leisure ‘in action’, and developing a proposal for practitioners on how to better reap the potential in the field drawing upon insights from the concepts learnt in the classroom.

Guest Lecture on ‘Modern HR Trends

A guest lecture on ‘Modern HR Trends’ organized by the HRM specialization area was successfully held on15th of February 2019 from 9.00 a.m. to 12 .00 noon at MFLT 06 with the participation of students and staff. The lecture was conducted by Major Janaka Witharana, Deputy General Manager, Human Resources, Brandix Apparel Solutions Limited. This provided students with experiential knowledge on practical implementation of Human Resource Management and future job opportunities available in the apparel industry.
CSR Initiative by HRD Circle
Human Resource Development Circle launched a CSR project for the second consecutive year, “ATHWELA 02” on 07th January 2019 in aid of Matara / Dehigaspa Anagarika Dharmapala Kanitu Vidyalaya. As the first phase of CSR, the roof of a main building was completely renovated and the buildings of the school were repaired and colour washed . The second phase included providing education necessities to school children. The main objective of this project was to uplift the quality of learning environment and create a passion for continuous learning among the school students.
Chrismas Eve 2018
Chrismas Eve 2018, basically an annual carol service in nature is to be held on 19th of December 2018 at the MFLT 5 from 2.30 p.m. onwards. The undergraduates at the faculty organize the event consecutively since 2017. This carol concert will provide participants with a fertile opportunity to enjoy classical music recitals with a seasonal twist. Notably, the concert will feature carol performance by the staff at the faculty as well.
Grand Finale of the Adcon 2018
Grand Finale of the Adcon 2018, which is an advertising competition organized by the Department of Marketing with the collaborative participation of the undergraduates and school students from the Southern province was successfully held on the 21st of September, 2018 at University of Ruhuna. The competition along with a musical evening was basically organized as to mark the 10th anniversary of the Department of Marketing. The event was filled with mind-blowing creative talents of the contestants. Mahinda Rajapaksha college became the winner of the competition while Rahula college was the first runner-up.
A Workshop on Qualitative Research

A workshop on qualitative research studies, organized by the Circle of Marketing was held on 20th of August, 2018 at the MFLT 06 from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon. The workshop provided participants with an understanding to basic theoritical knowledge on qualitative research and, further, the uses of qualitative studies. Dr. Dushan Chaminda, an expert of the qualitative research, was the resource person of the workshop. He was able to make the session more interactive and interesting. At the last half of the session, the participants were given an opportunity to present a qualitative research idea of their own drawing upon insights from what they learnt during the session.
A Workshop On Sensing The Career Opportunities And Setting The Career Goals

A workshop on sensing the career opportunities and setting the career goals, organized by the Career Guidance Unit in collaboration with Sampath Bank is going going to be held on 06th of August, 2018 at the Fisheries Auditorium from 9.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. The workshop is targeted at final year undergraduates at the faculty and, they are requested to bring a well designed CV in attending the workshop. The workshop is to be conducted by an expertise team at Sampath bank Plc. The participation is mandatory for the given target group.
2 day workshop for final year undergraduates

The Circle of Marketing is going to conduct a 2 day workshop for final year undergraduates on Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) on 25th of July, and 08th of August 2018 respectively. The workshop will provide participants with an understanding of SEM, the skills to prepare data, run an analysis, troubleshoot problems, and interpret estimates and fit indices.
Dancing and Literature Competition IFDLC 2018

The Inter-Faculty Dancing and Literature Competition (IFDLC 2018), organized by the University of Ruhuna is going to be held in the near future at the premises of Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna. Those who eager on participating this, are instructed to present what you composed, to the faculty coordinator; Mr. Chirath Jeewantha on or before 13th of July, 2018. Feel free to talk to the faculty coordinator for any concern.

Faculty Day 2019

The Faculty of Management and Finance organized the "Faculty Day 2019" on 30th of January 2019 at university playground. The “Faculty Day 2019” kicked off at 8.00 in the morning and continued till 6.00 in the evening. The event was a great success with the active involvement of the participants; academics, non-academics, and undergraduates. Through providing an ideal platform to break the wheel of monotony for a while, the event helped participants to strike a balance between routine and extra-curricular activities.

Rhythm of Marketing 2k18
The Circle of Marketing organized 'Rhythm of Marketing 2k18, which was basically a ceremonial function for welcoming new students to the Department of Marketing. As such, the official welcoming of newcomers to the Department of Marketing was held on 27th of November 2018 at the MFLT 03 with the participation of academic staff and the marketing major undergraduates at the Department. The welcoming ceremony featuring speeches from the Head of the Department and the office bearers of the Circle of Marketing had been continuing for the duration of one hour.
A workshop on Counseling
A workshop on 'Counseling' organized by the Faculty of Management and Finance was held on 30th October 2018 from 09.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon at Faculty Board Room. The workshop was basically intended to provide participants with an awareness on " Guidance, Counseling and Its Principles". The resource person, Mr. Gamini Hemachandra, Senior Psychological Counselor was able to make the session more interactive through allowing participants to bring their ideas into a discussion.
Workshop on Personal Branding and Professionalism 2018
Sri Lankan Airlines Aviation College together with the Career Guidance Unit successfully conducted an interactive one-day workshop on 24th of August 2018 on the theme, “Personal Branding and Professionalism” at the auditorium of Science Faculty. The sessions were conducted by Ms. Ayanthi Silva, Business Development and Training Operations Manager, Sri Lankan Aviation College, Sri Lankan Airlines Limited. The workshop was indeed a solid foundation for the students to be groomed and transformed into proficient individuals in reaching their own career goals.
Sada Sakmana Musical Event 2018

"Sada Sakmana Musical Event 2018" organized by Faculty of Management and Finance consecutively for the second time in collaboration with Southern Provincial Council Cultural Centre, on 08th August 2018, from 4.00 p.m to 6.00 p.m at the faculty premises. The event will provide academic, non-academic and students with a platform to exhibit their aesthetic talents and skills.
The Tax Seminar

The Circle of Accounting organizes a Tax Seminar, which is to be conducted by Inland Revenue Department on 18th of July 2018 from 08.30 a.m. onwards at the auditorium of Fisheries and Marine Sciences & Technology. The seminar will be extremely beneficial for the people those who are looking to gain more information on the topic. Academic & non-academic staff members, and the students from the different faculties are warmly welcome to the event.
Workshop on Accountability and Workload Model

A workshop on Accountability and Workload model was conducted at the Faculty Computer Unit on 22nd of May, 2018 as to provide participants with an understanding of the usage of the system. In the workshop, academic memebers at the faculty were instructed on how to get their profiles on the system completed and updated accurately. This was a fertile opportunity for participants to getting more familiarize with the system.

A One-day Field Visit

Department of Management and Entrepreneurship organized a one-day field visit to Jetwing Kaduruketha and Jetwing Yala to provide students with practical exposure on Agrotourism and their respective green practices. Through participating in the field visit, students had a chance to see how tourism and entrepreneurship work in tandem in the real world. As such, the field visit enabled students to enhance their knowledge of tourism by linking what they learnt in the classroom with practical applications.
AGM of the TUFMF
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the TUFMF was held on 23rd of January 2019 from 12.00 noon to 2.00 p.m. at the University Guest House with the participation of more than half of its members. The AGM provided members with an opportunity to mingle with each other thereby breaking the wheel of monotony for a while. After presenting the detailed information for the last year activities at TUMAF, the president thanked members for their unrelenting dedication and effort on activities atTUFMF. The meeting ended with the election of office bearers and the committee members (re-appointing the old ones as they were) for the continuation of the activities at the TUMA For the coming year.
The Workshop on Facebook as a Marketing Tool
ICTA team at the faculty together with Mr. Udara Dharmasena and Sithira Nandula from Neo@Ogilvy Sri Lanka; the Facebook ground support partner for training in Sri Lanka, conducted a workshop for the undergraduates at the University of Ruhuna on 12th December 2018 at the faculty premises. The workshop was conducted as a part of the ImagineIF entrepreneurial boot-camp. The workshop which was conducted under the theme of "Using Facebook as a Marketing Tool for Start-ups" basically aimed at educating participants on how to reap the maximum out of Facebook fan pages.
A Workshop on Branding
The Department of Marketing together with Softlogic PLC conducted a workshop on branding on 11th of September, 2018 from 01.00 p.m. to 06.00 p.m. at the MLFT 05. The workshop was aimed at providing participants with an understanding on practical world applications of the theories and concepts learned in the classroom. Mr. Nuwan Widyapathige, Ms. Kavi Rajapaksha,Ms. Chamindri Pilimatalauwe,Mr. Rajitha Gammanpila, Mr. Saminda Kumara, and Mr. Tuan Fareen Rajap acted as the resource persons of the workshop.
The 25th general convocation
The 25th general convocation of the University of Ruhuna was successfully held on 07th & 08th of September, 2018 at the Rabindranath Tagore Memorial Auditorium at the University of Ruhuna for the conferment of the Special, General and Postgraduate degrees of the University of Ruhuna. The event is held ceremonially in every year to confer the degrees to students who have completed their respective degrees. The conferment of the degrees of Faculty of Management and Finance was held in the afternoon session on 08th of September, 2018.
Workshop on Sensing Career Opportunities
Sampath Bank PLC, together with the Career Guidance Unit of University of Ruhuna and the Faculty of Management and Finance successfully conducted a one-day workshop on “Sensing Career Opportunities” for final year undergraduates at the Faculty of Management and Finance, University of Ruhuna on 06th August 2018 at the auditorium of Fisheries and Marianne Sciences. The main aim of this workshop was to provide undergraduates with an in-depth awareness on the current Sri Lankan job market, expectations of the employers in 21st century, and setting career goals. The workshop was figure-headed by Dr. Lalith Weragoda, the Assistant General Manager of Human Resource who is an eminent alumnus of the University of Ruhuna.
The Alumni Association
The Alumni reunion was held on 15th of June, 2018 at the university guest house with a massive participation. The newly appointed office bearers and the partcipants were keen at the reunion as it provided them an opportunity to get rid of the routines for a while. As decided at the first gathering, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) is to be held on 26th of August, 2018 at the faculty premises.
A Workshop For the Faculty Development

A workshop for the faculty development was held on 09th of May, 2018 at the faculty board room, basically, with the intention of discussing the strategic plan of the university and the new degree programmes which are going to be introduced in the near future. The workshop provided academic staff memebers with a platform to share their diverse views.
